Moving Through Blue

We saw you in the park last night
Moving through blue Christmas lights
that still hang in the trees
a month into the new year.

You were gone before we got to you
The dog looked around confused
I swear he could smell you and
I think there was a tear in his eye.

Lost in a world of happenstance
It’s a short and painful dance
If we avoid the sorrow
We sacrifice the joy
and lose wonder
to the pursuit of happiness.

The wind
is silent until it reaches something
that lets it howl
or whisper.
In it I hear your voice;
I don’t know if it’s
singing
or weeping
but it carries on.
I know you carry on.

I don’t understand
I can’t explain
It’s a feeling and
I trust my heart,
even when it’s broken.
